Tom Roney

"I'm Tom Roney and I'm the Sports Co Ordinator at my school currently.

I really like this position because I get to see the kids outside of the classroom and exceeding in things other than just school work.

There are a lot of students there that the classroom isn't where they are excelling but then they get out on the sporting field and they do something they are enjoying and you can really see them thrive. So I guess with my position I get to follow those kids through and watch them grow through their years and not just in the classroom but outside. There's a number of students that I have coached over my time as a teacher, and now I am a team mate with at my local footy club. Now I don't see them as an ex-student any more, I just see them as one of my own team mates. Watching them grow throughout that, and bonding with them through sport is something that is really nice. I guess personally teaching has also given me the ability to travel and take my profession over seas, over to London where I worked for nearly 12 months. That was a whole new kettle of fish, I had to adapt very quickly. There's a lot of students from all different nationalities over there, it's quite complex. I have also taught down at Brisbane and South Australia so teaching has given me that freedom to do what I want to do. I love traveling, I love exploring and going to new places and challenges so I can't imagine how I would be able to do that if I didn't become a teacher. "
